What causes Mpox

•Mpox is a viral disease caused by the monkey pox virus (MPXV).

Signs and Symptoms

•Symptoms of mpox include:

  • Painful rash that is distinctive and begins as pimples or blisters and develops into fluid filled blisters that are itchy and painful
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Headaches and muscle aches.
  • The person may have respiratory symptoms such as cough, nasal congestion and sore throat.

Monitoring of Mpox: Who should be monitored for Mpox?

•Any persons who have been in contact or is suspected to be in contact with people or animals with mpox should be monitored for the signs and symptoms for a period up to 21 days (CDC). 

•Usually, the symptoms start to appear within 21 days from exposure to the virus

•Monitoring helps in early detection of signs and symptoms.

What should be monitored?

•Look out for the common signs and symptoms outlined above. 

•Also conduct a thorough assessment of skin and mouth using good lighting for any signs of rash or lesions.

•The rash may be located on hands, feet, chest, face, mouth or around the groin area (the genitals) and the anus.

•Testing can be recommended by a healthcare provider within the 21 day monitoring period or if the healthcare provider decides to extend the 21 day period to monitor the emergence of any new signs and symptoms.
